Why won’t most other long distance companies allow you to point a toll free number to a cell phone?

There are several reasons why most long distance carriers won’t point toll free numbers to cell phones. Cell phone companies and small local carriers charge a higher fee to the originating long distance carrier for terminating calls, on the "last mile." Many also require you to change your long distance carrier which you can’t do for your cell phone or for some flat rate plans. Toll free only also has a higher credit risk. So for a combination of all these factors, many companies just won’t provide toll free service to a cell phone.

There are some other ways to work it out.

You can trick the system into pointing your toll free number to a cell phone. Some companies "say" they can’t point a toll free number to a cell phone but they actually can if you just ignore their prohibition. If they require outbound long distance you can often sign up the long distance of a different line and then point the toll free number to a different number (like your cell phone).

A special trick to get your calls to follow you to your cell phone for less.

You can also point a toll free number to your local number and then forward it to your cell phone number. Even better, if you use Forward-No-Answer and Forward-Busy you can have it ring at your home or office, and if you don’t answer it or if you’re on the phone already, it will automatically roll over to your cell phone. This gives you a type of follow me capability that may even cost you less than pointing the toll free number directly to your cell phone. A toll free number gives you more anonymity and control than a local number.

Most people change their cell phone service and numbers a lot more than they do their local numbers. There is a lot more competition in cell phones than local service and you usually have to change your number to change your carrier. You also may not want to give out your cell phone to everyone. A toll free number gives you both more anonymity and more control because you can change the ring to number without anyone knowing or realizing. It also prevents anyone from being able to tell where you are located the way they can with a local number. In fact there is no whois lookup type of a database, so short of hiring a private investigator, there's no way for anyone to trace the owner of a toll free number.
